Our Story
In 1984, Calpine was formed with an investment in 1 MW of geothermal capacity in Northern California. Today, Calpine is powering approximately 27 million homes every year. We operate 77 facilities in 22 states and Canada. Since the beginning, we have been committed to delivering clean and reliable energy to our customers.

Experience
As America’s largest generator of electricity from natural gas and geothermal resources, Calpine is leveraging its deep expertise and geographic diversity to deliver clean, reliable power across the United States. Calpine operates one of the youngest, most efficient fleets of gas-fired power plants in the nation that are built to provide the reliability needed to support America’s energy grid. We proudly operate more highly efficient cogeneration plants than any other power generator in the nation and are leading the charge on cutting-edge carbon capture and energy storage projects. We also are investing in one of the world’s largest grid-connected battery systems to keep the power grid up and running during peak periods of use while integrating intermittent renewables into the grid.
Innovation
Calpine is investing in innovative technologies to help our customers achieve their clean energy goals. In addition to having emissions control technology on all of our gas-fired units, Calpine is leading the charge on cutting-edge carbon capture and storage technologies that will allow our plants to supply the electric grid with low-carbon power 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Calpine is also a top investor in energy storage and operates the biggest geothermal facility in the world — California’s largest single source of renewable power.

Calpine takes an intentional approach to growth, designed to support the needs of our customers for clean and reliable power now and into the future. We prioritize cost-effective pathways to decarbonization and continually optimize and modernize our assets to ensure our fleet remains one of the most efficient in the industry. Our flexible plants and battery storage systems also help stabilize the grid by integrating intermittent renewables.
Calpine has embarked on a new development program to grow its generation business where needed by local communities and to expand our renewable and zero-carbon efforts including expansion at The Geysers, our geothermal generation facilities, as well as large-scale battery storage, a new solar project and carbon capture and sequestration projects.
