Sutter Carbon Capture

Developed in 2001, Sutter Energy Center was the first merchant combined-cycle energy facility to come online to modernize California’s energy infrastructure. Sutter Energy Center, an air-cooled facility preserving California’s water resources, is a reliable source of energy located near Yuba City, California serving Northern California load centers.

The Sutter Decarbonization Project is pioneering efforts to meet CO₂ reduction goals while maintaining regional access to cost-efficient and reliable power. Upon completion, this baseload project is expected to receive 95% CO₂ capture efficiency.

The Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations within the Department of Energy (DOE) selected Calpine’s Sutter Energy Center and entered into a cost-sharing agreement to build a commercial-scale, carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) project that will capture and store up to 1.75 million metric tons of carbon dioxide each year.

The Sutter Decarbonization Project will retrofit the Sutter Energy Center, an existing 550-megawatt natural gas combined-cycle energy facility located in Sutter County, California. Working together with ION Clean Energy’s post-combustion carbon capture technology and our sequestration partner, the Sutter Decarbonization Project is critical to achieving California’s ambitious carbon neutrality goals while maintaining grid reliability and affordable customer rates.
