Powering today for tomorrow.

Since our inception, Calpine has prioritized sustainability – both in what we say and in what we do.

Calpine has long been at the forefront of the power generation’s transition to cleaner sources of energy through its advocacy for market-based policies that prioritize environmental responsibility.  At the same time, we have invested all along in generation technologies that exemplify environmental stewardship.

Our emphasis on sustainability has positioned us in the right place at the right time for the energy transformation that is currently underway in the United States.  Calpine’s current and future generation resources will be needed for years to come to provide clean and reliable power across the country.

Stewards of our Resources

Calpine was the first power producer to earn the distinction of Climate Action Leader. By virtue of the clean and reliable technologies in which we have invested, our power generation footprint represents an ongoing commitment to environmental responsibility.

Air

Our Russell City Energy Center features the nation’s first air permit voluntarily subject to greenhouse gas emissions limits.

Water

Rather than using water from lakes, bays and rivers, Calpine uses nearly 32 million gallons of reclaimed water every day in its energy centers throughout the country.

Calpine’s Otay Mesa Energy Center in San Diego features one of the world’s largest air-cooled condensers, which allows us to cool the plant using minimal amounts of water.

Efficiency

As the operator of the nation’s largest fleet of cogeneration technology, we have been recognized by the Environmental Protection Agency’s Combined Heat and Power Partnership for our contributions to efficient domestic energy production and reduced carbon dioxide emissions.

Active Advocates

Calpine has taken a leadership role in advocating for regulation and policies at the state, regional and federal level that support environmental responsibility in the power generation sector. In recognition of our leadership role, Calpine’s Executive Chairman of the Board Thad Hill was invited to stand next to President Obama as the “Clean Power Plan” was announced.

Solutions for our Customers

Our Calpine Energy Solutions retail platform provides expertise in helping customers identify power solutions that expertly balance the need for reliable and affordable power with meeting their own sustainability objectives.  Similarly, our Commercial Operations team offers our wholesale power customers their expertise at structuring transactions that can include environmental products and/or renewable energy components.
